Visitors and Maui residents often ask about paddling when they see our bright red and gold wa‘a (canoes) in the waters off Kihei, Wailea, Makena and Ma‘alaea. In response, Kihei Canoe Club is happy to offer an outrigger Visitor Paddle experience Tuesday and Thursday year round, conditions permitting — which includes an introduction to Hawaiian Culture, brief instruction in outrigger canoe paddling, and discussion of the local sea life. Afterwards, you are invited to enjoy the complimentary home-baked goods and coffee while taking a look at our club merchandise.
Beginning August 6, 2024, adults and youth over the age of 12 and 48" (1.2m) in height are welcome to paddle with experienced club members in single or double hull outrigger canoes. No previous experience required. Youth less than 18 must be accompanied by a participating adult responsible for them.

Visitors MUST register INDIVIDUALLY by completing the required information, signing a waiver, and making a tax-deductible $40 donation (KCC is an IRS 501(3)(c) organization) for EACH PARTICIPANT. NOTE: Your credit card will charged for each INDIVIDUAL registration – we are not able to create a single purchase for multiple registrants at this time.
Visitor Paddle sessions begin with E Ala E — a traditional chant to welcome the rising sun over our dormant volcano, Haleakalā. Depending on conditions, we may paddle to an outer reef to see sea turtles and tropical fish, venture out to observe whales (Dec-Apr), or head north toward a coral reef near Kealia Pond / Sugar Beach.
In regards to the sea life you might encounter during a paddle session…
Green sea turtles (honu) abound in close proximity to the club and paddlers are very likely to see them up close — there’s also a chance to see large rays. The biggest thrill comes during whale (kohala) season (Dec-Apr) when we encounter these gigantic creatures. We make no promises, but we see whales most days in February and March. We are extremely careful to respect the creatures who inhabit these waters, creatures recognized by the Hawaiians as family gods, the living embodiment of their ancestors.
We will provide you a paddle, and a place to store your car keys or anything else you don’t want to get wet or lose. Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet (or a bathing suit) and bring a towel for after the paddle session. Remember to bring your camera (in a waterproof holder or case) to capture the beauty of Maui in the early morning. Objects in the canoes may get wet, so we recommend you do not bring anything in the canoe that is not waterproof.
