The Call of the Wa’a: Your Season on the Water

Outrigger paddling is more than a workout; it is a connection to the ocean, a tribute to heritage, and a masterclass in synchronicity. Whether you are looking to find your rhythm in the calm of the morning or test your mettle against the channel swells, there is a seat in the canoe for you.

Here is how our year unfolds and why you belong in the mix.

Regatta Season: Precision & Power (March – August)

Regatta season is where we forge our foundation. Sanctioned by the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association (MCHCA) and Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (HCRA), this season is about explosive speed and technical excellence.

  • The Build: Starting in March, we hit the water for intensive practices designed to sync six seats into a single heartbeat.

  • The Race: From late May through July, we transition to Saturday regattas—high-energy events where clubs from across the islands meet to compete.

  • The Pinnacle: The season reaches its fever pitch on the first Saturday of August at the HCRA State Championship, where the fastest crews in Hawaii battle for the gold!

Distance Season: Endurance & Spirit (August – October)

For those who crave the open ocean, Distance Season offers the ultimate test of character. This is where we leave the sheltered bays behind to find our "second wind" in the deep blue.

  • The Transition: The grind continues on Sundays after the State Championship, as the focus truly pivots from short sprints to long-form endurance.

  • The Journey: We compete in Maui-specific races and inter-island challenges that prepare us for the world stage.

  • The Ultimate Test: The season culminates in late September and early October with the legendary crossing of the Ka’iwi Channel. Whether it’s the Na Wahine O Ke Kai or the Molokai Hoe, crossing that channel is a rite of passage that stays with a paddler for a lifetime.

Guided by Excellence: Our Coaching Staff

You aren't just joining a club; you are learning from a lineage. Our coaches bring a combined wealth of experience ranging from 10 to more than 50 years on the water. Our leadership doesn't just talk about victory; they’ve lived it. With a pedigree that includes State Championship medals, Distance titles, and top-tier OC-1 rankings, they provide world-class technical instruction. However, their true mission goes beyond the podium. They are here to:

  • Perpetuate the love of the sport.

  • Instill a deep-seated respect for the wa’a (canoe).

  • Nurture the value of ‘ohana (family) in every stroke.

Ready to reach for the horizon?

Whether you’re a novice looking for your first taste or a veteran seeking a new crew, the water is calling. Come find your seat at Kihei Canoe Club!
